NIGERIA RANKS SIXTH IN CLIMATE CHANGE EFFECT INDEX
A report by the British risk consultancy, Maple croft,
has ranked Nigeria sixth among countries that are most vulnerable to effects of
climate change.
According
to the report published on October 31, the index was developed to identity
climate risks to populations, governments and businesses over the next 30
years. The three factors that were evaluated in coming with the findings
included exposure to extreme climate-related events; the sensitivity of
populations in terms of health, education, agricultural dependence and
available infrastructure; and the adaptive capacity of countries to combat the
impacts of climate change. The 2013 index, which rated 193 countries, reported
that rising sea levels, flooding and other extreme climate-rated events would
threaten the future of the countries that were rated high or extreme. The
report stated that 67 countries facing high risks with an estimated combined
output of $44tn, would come under increasing treat from the physical impacts of
more frequent and extreme climate-related events, such as serve storms,
flooding and drought.
