STAKEHOLDERS SEEK IMPROVED MEDICAL WASTE MANAGEMENT
The improper handling of health care waste is growing
problem in the country and other parts of the world and stakeholders have been
discussing ways to tackle it and mitigate its effects on the society. According
to reports, for many years about 99 per cent of health care wastes generated in
Lagos State could not be accounted for suggesting that medical waste was being
mixed with domestic waste or illegally dumped despite its high risk potential.
At this year’s National Health care waste summit
hosted by the Lagos state waste management Authority, the risk of improper
dumping of this class of waste was revisited. The forum had as its theme,
‘health care waste management and the environment’.
